The lack of external controls won't bother me. I played with it in a store and it's a pretty intuitive touch screen system - especially if you are familiar with the Canon quick menu.
Focus speed remains to be seen.
Assuming they both actually get here (I'm beginning to think customs is sitting on the M), I'll post some comparison thoughts.
I don't think the focus speed was all that bad in some situations. It was only really slow if you picked your own point and focused with the shutter, it seemed faster when I did the touch focus. I think I would have to sit down with the EOS-m and NEX side by side. The NEX isn't exactly a quick focusing camera.
I think NEX is definitely a more mature system, where the EOS-m is just starting. I think I would wait with EOS-M to see where they are going with it. Sony and Samsung both released many lenses a year for a couple years. It has only been about half a year for the EOS-m so it is not long enough to really know what they are going to be doing.

If this were my only camera, I'd worry more about the complete lens lineup. I've got several Canon DSLRs, lenses and flashes, so when I need the full features, I've got it covered. This is intended more as a lightweigh travel camera (and to be honest - to some extent a toy). That's how I used the 5n previously and liked it a lot in that role. In fact if the newer/more advanced features don't blow me away, I may return or sell everything and pick up another 5n!
