Unfortunately there is no trial version of Aperture 3. Apple has been very evasive in providing any credible info regarding an impending update or a complete shutdown. Either way, the current version is great, as I own it and use it often.
Try LR4's trial version. If you hate their 'room' workflow as much as I did, go with Aperture 3. Hopefully Aperture (whatever comes next) will be a major update. Apple is not as invested in digital photography as much as Adobe is, so factor that in. Despite my affinity for A3, their may come a time even I move to LR4 if Apple continues to lag behind, but LR4 or LR5 will have to offer some major advantages first. Advantages relevant to what I personally need.

I am far too busy taking pictures to look for problems with the cameras I use to take them.
Is Aperture as good as LR4 for supporting M43 lenses Olympus raw files? I'm thinking about getting a new imac soon as was probably going to go LR4 but might try Aperture.
