A little lesson in geometry is appropriate here.
With a tool like this where you focus on a target to the left and use a slanted ruler to the right of the target to evaluate front and back focus it will ALWAYS appear as if there is back focus when moving the tool to the left of dead center and front focus to the right of dead center. This is exacerbated when you do the measurements close to the target. Take a piece of paper and plot it out.
