DxOMark Test and Review of Olympus 75 1.8
Side note, the second paragraph is sure to help dispel the myth that I've read on these forums more than once that m43 lenses are sharper than FF lenses (Just sayin', not looking to stir things up or for an argument as I'm exhausted from all the bickering over on the Nikon forums).
I have not seen arguments about m43 lenses being sharper than FF lenses on FF cameras. Especially cameras with 20+ mpx sensors. But you should take a look at how it does on an APSC camera with 16 mpx to get a more accurate comparison of sharpness. Note that even this is not strictly a fair matchup due to other factors, but it might stop the "just sayin'" type comments...
You are totally right about the "just sayin'" expression. Let me apologize right here and now for saying that horribly annoying phrase!!! It really does get under my skin when others say it, so I really should never have typed it. Yikes. Too much YouTube, Reddit and camera forums I guess.
Accepted!
Anyway, that's the 85 1.8 AF-D, the previous Nikkor portrait lens. It's a fine lens, but the quote from the DxOMark 75 1.8 review is referencing the newer 85 1.8G lens which is superior, from what I've seen. (However, one nice thing about the AF-D lenses is because of the aperture ring, they work perfectly on m43 cameras). But all things being equal, I prefer the 85 1.8G, a lens I use almost every day.
I stand corrected. Another poster has shown the performance on a 16mpx camera and it is still better than the 75. Looking in more detail though, the 75 is better wide open, as you would expect from the smaller sensor.
Don't stand corrected! It depends how you are measuring the performance of the lens of course the FF lens as part of a FF system with a bigger surface area and more pixels - but now compare the central 16MP of the 60MP FF sensor with the same results and then say how the lens looks - that would be a fairer measure of the actual lens 'sharpness' in isolation.
I haven't seen anyone try to claim that the OM-D with a 75mm would out resolve a Nikon D800 with a great lens (maybe I just missed them) - but there is a difference between system resolution and lens sharpness (I am assuming we mean resolving power) - if so then that is what people are talking about most of the time I think.
