Why is the EM5 so much more popular than the GH3?

Panasonic can learn from Sony (NEX)
In reply to mpgxsvcd, 4 months ago

I sold my GH2 in preparation for the GH3, and in between, checked out the OMD, which I loved for all the reasons everyone one else does, design, IQ (I saw what others had done with on this site) and versatility. However, the handling suited smaller hands than mine. Got to play with a GH3, and whilst ergonomically nice, it is almost the size of a regular DSLR so defeats the object of 43rds, plus it is costly. Whilst I may get one when budget allows and I can afford two cameras (big/small!), I got a Sony NEX 5R. I know there is a war between NEX and 43rds community, but whilst the menus on the NEX are a disaster, it is a remarkable piece of engineering. Remove the lens and you have a body with a fairly large sensor that is just under an inch thick! The speed of operation and IQ is outstanding for the price, not to mention the well implemented panorama feature that whilst gimmicky is in fact priceless for landscapes and interior photography.

I think Panasonic need to take the best of the GH3 and shrink it into their next GX series camera:-

  • Ultra thin & light pocketable body
  • Splashproof
  • Better than Sony menus!
  • GH3 handling
  • LX lens ring for tactile adjustment of aspect ratio
  • NEX/OM D like down or up display for faster flipping when doing street photography
  • Twin control dials
  • 50/60fps video (the video on the NEX 5R is outstanding, although Panasonic still have the edge)
  • Mic input
  • USB charging (I find this very useful because it means carrying one less charger)
  • Kit X lens like that available with the G5
  • Other (Your wants!)
