According to the exact same Focal page, you got lucky with your D3s because the 11 D3s's shown have just as bad (or worse) spread than the D800.  In fact, EVERY Nikon shown on the Focal page has a wider spread than EVERY Canon shown.  The BEST Nikon is WORSE than the WORST Canon.  The Focal database suggests Canon does a much better job tuning their cameras from the factory.

I am curious what luck people have experienced when sending their Nikon cameras for focus tuning service.  Canon used to do tuning free, but you had to send your lenses in with the body (I say used to because I hadn't looked into recently.)  I never had a Canon that needed to be sent in but I read of other's who did and were happy with this service.
