I think we have all experienced these problems in certain conditions.
From what I can see, part of your problem is shooting through the window. The camera will not give the best photo shooting though glass, especially if you shoot though the glass on an angle.
Possiblly the biggest problem is the bird is on the ground. If the back ground is too busy a lot of noise is produced. The best shots are produced when the bird is perched on a twig etc, where the back ground can be blurred out.
Comparing your photos the sparrow, with the blurred back ground, comes up quite well with a bit of pp.
In your first photo you have used 4x digital zoom. So considering you shot through the window on an angle, the bird is on the ground with a busy back ground and 4x digital zoom is used, you are hopeful expecting a great shot.
Sometimes you just cannot get the shot, but we keep trying anyway we can.
