Your point about lack of flash EC button access does have a solution, though. See pg 42 in the manual.

In Record menu, got to Flash (pg 4) > Set > Firing Mode "TTL" > scroll down past the fourth item "Flash Adjust" to "Auto Exposure Comp" at top of next pg (pg 2 of Flash menu) and set to "On". Exit menu, and now, with the EC button on top pressed, one wheel controls standard EC, and the other flash EC, and the Disp. button toggles the choice. Flash doesn't have to be deployed to set.
