software suggestion for viewing image review on PC

I have a Nikon d5100.

I understand that there is software that will permit a DSLR to be connected to a PC and allow exposures to be viewed immediately on my PC.  I think Nikon has their own version.

But, I was wondering what other Brands might be available at other price points that users might have experience with.

Maybe a suggestion as to where I might compare such software, read about their capabilities, etc..
