I just received my lens a couple of days ago, hope tomorrow I'll get a lot more shots since I have the day off. I did a quick test in our dining room in very low light, again with my D700 and AF assist lamp turned off. The subject was a large, but plain white candle. When the focus point was on the center of the candle I think PD did not have anything to lock onto and the lens hunted. As soon as I choose the sharp edge of the candle holder (which was also white) the lens locked on to it quickly the first time with no problem at all. So I would say the lens behaved like most Nikon's would and as I expected in that situation.
