Have you compared these two cameras side by side?

  • Olympus OM-D E-M5 is 9% (11.9 mm) narrower and 4% (3.8 mm) shorter than Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3.
  • Olympus OM-D E-M5 is 49% (40.1 mm) thinner than Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3.
  • Olympus OM-D E-M5 [400 g] weights 27% (150 grams) less than Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 [550 g] (*inc. batteries and memory card).

too bad they don't have a side view of the GH-3, but the top view is the really instructive one.

OK now do the same measurements with the flash on the top of the EM5

The OND is a great camera with fidly buttons and control because of its size. IMHO

The GH3 has been designed with the requests of many GH2 users in mind. If u hold a GH3 and open the battery compartment you will see where a lot of the extra size has come from.

The GH3 will and is being welcomed by the people who it was designed for. It will and is being used for in many professional situations, particularly video, in which the larger form factor will benefit the user. The GH3 will be used many times more as a pro tool than the EM5 that was designed for a different market.

To say that the GH3 doesn't compete with a K5 or D7000 is blatantly wrong on many levels.

Relatively the K5 for example.

Will not be used popularly by film makers, Will not accept Legacy glass, Video quality is poor by comparison, Not as customisable, doesn't have a 24-70, 70-200 fast lens option, IS much bigger and heavier if you try to find lenses to meet these ranges. will not AF in video. Has no live view in the eye level finder, poor sound implementation, poor monitoring of sound option, relatively slow AF with considerable back and forward focus issues (having owned one)

The GH3 is certainly not a bloated monstrosity

B

an E-pl1 is a bloated monstrosity.

Really, anything bigger than a Leica M4 is a bloated monstrosity.

Anything bigger than a Minolta CLe is just bloated.

The Leica M4 and Minolta CLE are the pinacle of camera design and should be the measure of all other system cameras.
