You are preaching to the choir.  However, I made the decision late last fall to do just that, buy a used D700 at 65% of the D800 price.  The result is that I have a camera built like a tank with a focus system (and other systems) that has given me absolutely no problems.

To me, the most telling statement is "D800 focus issues appear to be a common problem, as the Reikan data suggests."

Yet, after such a long time there is no official statement from Nikon.  If Nikon didn't have such a crappy service department, I doubt we would still be having this conversation.  But my experience with Melville on a lens was abysmal.  I suspect they don't know how to fix the cameras they do get and are returning cameras in about the same condition for many.
