SX50 bird fiasco. Help.

One thing I have noticed is your reference to shooting through glass.  Could that have made them soft.

I had a similar problem the other day realised the focus area was rather large, you can reduce it by using the button on the right.  That gives a more specific focus area rather than letting the camera pick what it thinks is right inside the lager area (did that make sense)
