My wife has a problem when she catches the self timer button which doesn't allow the shutter button to fire. Could this be your problem too perhaps?

Is there any way of disabling the self timer to prevent this from happening?

Cheers, Tony

Sure. I had this problem of inadvertently pressing the ISO side of the 4 way control wheel on my SX40.  The SX50 differs in that that position is now the 'timer'.  My solution was to add a 3/8" round silicon stick on bumper, cut in half, and stuck barely to the outer side of the wheel.  Keeps the thumb base off that quadrant but still allows it's normal use.

Someone else suggested that there is a stick on ring available for that purpose but can't find the thread.  Perhaps they will respond.
