I thought like you when I first did some ND 3.0 shots with my at-the-time new D600. But the light leak and the fact that they ship the camera with an eye-piece blocker means that this is a known property/behavior, not a bug. I didn't notice this so pronounced on my previous Nikon SLR's, but if you know to cover the eyepiece, it's not a problem.

I also shoot with M43, so I'm spoiled my mirrorless cameras. Mirrorless cameras make light leak and PDAF calibration issues seem like crotchety old problems.
