Hand isn't good enough for ND 3.0 shots. You either don't cover it enough (which still allows enough light leak to create more subtle problems in your image which you might not even notice in the field) or you wind up touching your camera and moving it ever so slightly, blurring the image. My simple solution is just putting a piece of black duct tape over the eyepiece. It's also much simpler than removing the eyepiece and putting the blocker in place--that switch is time-consuming and it will lead to dropping and losing one of the pieces, especially if you're standing in water for your shot.
