Let me also backtrack a bit and recommend that you set it on center focus and not spot focus. This will essentially give the camera a larger area to acquire focus on. Which will allow you to not be so precise at pointing at a contrasty object.
Still, sometimes the "center area focus" can be too large for the subject (for ex. the face of a person 5 meters away) and you may get the same problem of the camera focusing on something else that is still in the area of center focus.
