Thanks to all for the great advice. I never would have thought to use my 14-24 f2.8 for this, but now I think it's a great solution. I may well rent the 24mm PC-E this spring and wander along the National Mall and in a few other architecture rich areas to experiment. If I like it, I notice that there are some good deals on the PC-Nikkor 35mm 2.8 on eBay for about $300-$500. Good idea?
The comments about the PC-E being time-consuming to set up and potentially holding people up is right on. I'd thought about that problem and will probably take a monopod instead of a tripod to keep from being a pain to other people on the tours. Fortunately, a very generous blonde Santa who will be on the cruise with me gave me a Sony RX-100 for Christmas and I'll be taking that, too. For those times when the D800/14-24 might be a problem, that little Sony will come out of my pocket.
I'll try to thank you all with a few good shots around 1 August.
Cheers,
Mike
