. . . Another option might be the 70-200/4L IS and the 300/4L IS (I got mine used, but in like new condition for $900). Of course this is a two lens option that costs a bit more, but one that I find flexible (I also have a 1.4 vII extender for even more options). The 300/4 IS is a very sharp lens and gives you a full stop extra speed vs the 70-300L IS. The 300 prime also takes the 1.4 vII extender very well and keeps AF on my 5D mkII.

I'd never buy the 70-300 L IS because it has visibly lower optical quality from 70-200 compare to the 70-200 f/4.0 L IS and almost one stop less light. On the other hand the 70-200 can be a really nice 98-280 mm lens with the same t-stop as the 70-300 and it is optical almost on par at almost

So I'm guessing you have never actually used the 70-300L and are simply measurbating from dxo scores? If I am wrong then I apologise but those scores do not reflect the overwhelming opinion of actual users. The 70-300L is about as sharp as they come. If you would take 2 minutes to look through the forum you would find pretty much every 70-200 f4IS user that picker up a 70-300L concluded the 70-300 was just as sharp (at least close enough to not be noticible).  There were even a few that gave up their 300/4Ls for the zoom.
