In a similar price point than the d90, you could get a d5100. You give up some physical buttons/dials on the camera, but get a more recent sensor.
Well, you can always apply noise reduction as a in-camera feature or better in post production (i.e. Dfine, Noiseninja), but you can't add dials and buttons by a firmware update
I would never give my D90 for D5100 or even D5200.
