Yes you're quite correct - I have no idea why Nikon chose to disable AF Assist with AF-C, I'm sure they have their reasons. Fortunately it needs to be pretty dark before the D700/D800 starts struggling to focus

I think the reason is that the light would STAY on as long as you held the AF-ON button down, turning the D800 into a flashlight and probably taxing the light itself.
