Why not a 21.6mm x 21.6mm sensor?

Correction to the post above. The measured diameter of the inner lens mount (inside the gold contacts) is 25.2mm. The maximum diameter of a round sensor would be about 22mm. And yes, it would require a shutter with longer travel and therefore presumably slower flash synch speed and more shutter shock.
