Thanks to all.

The 15-85 does seem the most versatile. I think the extra 30mm on the long end over the 17-55 will really help cut down on how often I need the 55-250, which would be quite convenient. I just hate using a flash, hence the attraction of the 17-55 f2.8. I guess I will be better served by the 15-85 and learning to use a flash more effectively.

The 35mm f2 does look interesting. I really like my 50mm f1.4, but on a crop body it is just too long for close quarters indoors. The 35mm f2 IS USM looks very nice too, as does the 28mm f2.8 IS USM, but maybe not for three or more times the price...

The 30 mm f1.4 Sigma is also a good alternative. Comes at a reasonable price and has excellent IQ. That said, some people have complained about getting bad copies of this lens, but if you buy at a store where you can return it if you're not satisfied this would be my recommendation. I used to have this lens and I liked it a lot. I also had the 15-85 which is a fantastic travel and outdoors lens. I still had this nagging thought that the 17-55 would have been a "better" lens to have, but the 15-85 served me very well until I upgraded to full format.
