I agree with Lou's point about loss/importance of detail in such subjects; this wouldn't have occurred to me, but it's obvious as he mentions it.

Stephen's treatment seems like a workable, dramatic alternative.  Maybe try rotating the image to an orientation in which it's less immediately recognizable and therefore tends more toward the abstract.

Bold (unreal) color, maybe?
