That's quite the detailed explanation for something that's common sense.

The AF-On technique is a good plan. Move focus points rather than recomposing-OR-with 36 MP you could shoot wider than needed, then recompose later by cropping.

I have deleted my comment previously posted here as it may be incorrect.

A quick re-education has shown me that the points of focus at an subject is a plane not an arc. Therefore, focus lock then re-composing may cause the original focus point to be out of focus. It is imperative that DOF be considered to avoid the desired point from being out of optimum focus.
