Thanks Tom for the response and info on the combinations.

The step up ring arrived today so I have tried the Cokin set up and I think that there should be no problems as I would think that they are lighter than the lens hood/58mm filter combination. The only issue may be having to take care when rotating the Cokin holder as it is a bit stiff to turn.

There is no vignetting at the wide end either with the step up ring attached direct to the lens. I did try it with a 40.5mm filter on the lens first and did get some vignetting then. I thought the idea of having the step up ring attached to the 40.5mm filter would be good because you don't have to remove the protective ring from the lens housing as there is plenty of clearance.
