Somehow I just don't buy this concept.
I don't either, but guns do seem to be the weapon of choice of crazed lunatics and they can sure do a lot more damage with an assault weapon than a knife.
Much has been made of the lunatic responsible for Newtown, was not known to anyone as being a lunatic. Turns out that is incorrect. He was regulerly seeing a psychiatrist, and was actually on anti-psychotic medication. As were just about all the lunatics out there committing these kinds of crimes.
So he was getting treatment (I haven't seen this report) as are so many others.
It is easy to say after the fact that he should have had "better" treatment or that he should have been confined....but I don't think it's that easy to spot those who suddenly go berserk. Plenty of "normal" people go nuts without any warning.
We should prevent them from buying guns, however....that part seems easy by comparison. All gun sales should be subject to background checks.
Could it be that our problem with mass murder, (and a lot of smaller incidents like this) is that my country simply doesn't give a sht about the mentally ill?
