Hi Steve, I guess you weren't replying to me, but I see the issue more as one of having a clean workflow.
Most worries about color gamut don't involve blowing one or more channels. Meter well and Expose To The Right. You need a big color space to work in, i.e., ProPhotoRGB. You need a clean capture, which means the linear output. And you need to use only the minimal processing needed to create the rendering. Finally, you need to test it in the output color space. More than likely is that some of these colors will be outside the sRGB space no matter how hard you try. But you can keep them to a minimum.
