Adapter/Printer Help please

Hi, My printer is an HP Photosmart Pro B8800 Series  8850.  Suddenly today it isn't working properly.  It switches on, but makes only half of the usual noises it makes and the flat piece that raises itself so that you can put a sheet of paper in will not raise.

The adapter may be dead because it usual makes little noises when moved about on the floor but now it is dead silent.

I am trying to find out if it is the adapter which is "dead", or if there is something wrong with the printer.  So my question is : if the adapter WAS dead would it be possible for the printer even to switch on, as it can do now?  Or is it possible that the adapter is only "half dead", and that is explaining why the printer will only switch on and do nothing much else?
