A pop up could do that. I dont think it was gridded. It looks like a wide-ish angle lens, and the photographers was fairly close. The natural fall off of light would emphasise the player, as he is significantly closer than the rest.

The shadows suggest a very close to lens axis position. I doubt any one would bother to grid a flash for this shot, and any that would, would not place the light there.

A point and shoot could do this.
