First, the market determines the price. It sounds to me like your price is too high.
You may be right.
Second, overdone HDR and shooting everything wider is unnecessary and doesn't add value. It is possible to achieve a consistent look and properly show a listing using off-camera flash and a narrower angle of view. It could be your clients don't like your current work.
This is a fair comment. I have been accredited to work for a high end outfit who don't currently use me as I don't do floor plans. My HDR is very straightforward image fusion without too much of anything, but I take your point. 90 percent of the time the metered exposure would do the job, but by batch processing brackets for the whole the set of images I get better consistency.
I am battling with using a narrower angle. The way things are set up here, listings go up on via a national website and are viewed as a slideshow. I never shoot verticals, for example, because they would be indiscernable at such tiny sizes. By shooting wide I can crop out cielings and roads for example, and still have lots of pixels.
Google Scott Hargis and buy his eBook.
I follow Scott on Flickr and PFRE, I should take your advice. Maybe I am winging it. I use 3 SB's - I'd love a few more. The houses I shoot aren't massive like some of the places he shoots. Again I take your point though.
If your photographs resemble those found in interior design magazines instead of those the agents take, then your clients will be able to differentiate their marketing from their competitors. More listings for your clients means they will value your photos more.
The agent who uses me thought my photos were better than their own - theirs are by no means bad, but their clients tell me they went with the agent on the basis that that I would be shooting their home. They have the option. I'd like to post a link to their page but it might not be a good idea.
Thanks for your thoughtful feedback.
