Also understand the wind!

Apart from getting the 7D custom settings right it helps if you can use a strong wind in your favour. Birds flying into a strong wind will be moving much slower so things are a bit easier photographically. The ideal is with birds flying into the wind AND towards the sunlight. Quite a few birds will use buildings or slopes to temporarily hover or soar so this also can give you more opportunities.

Once you have a sequence of photos with the bird in focus then you can select for best composition and wing position.
