Dude, you are passing off info that is just wrong. There is no conspiracy here. The reason nikon is pushing you to AF-S lenses is because they have a silent wave motor which makes much less noise when focusing. This wasn't important in the past, but now that many people use SLR cameras for video, you can't have the sound of your lens grinding in and out of focus while you're recording audio.

This is the kind of unconditional defense of Nikon that I was talking about earlier. I will add 'quiet operation' to the list of reasons posited by the Nikon apologists.
*Size
*Weight
*Cost
*Silent Operation
The reality is as follows; when you attach a quiet AFS lens to a camera with a focusing motor, the focus motor does not engage. There is no extra noise. None. AFS lenses operate just as quietly on all cameras whether they have the focus motor or not. AFS operation is not affected at all whether a camera has a focus motor or not. Users still get that quiet video operation with all AFS lenses.
However, once Nikon took away the focus motor from the entry level cameras (and mark my words....entry level is not the end) they have obsoleted all of the older style autofocus lenses on these cameras. They have greatly reduced the value of millions of legacy lenses that their loyal customer base has collected over the years. They did this, not to ensure quiet video operation, but to force the next generation to buy new versions of all of these lenses again. Nobody is arguing that AFS isn't superior to AF and AFD....it is. It's quieter, faster and probably more accurate. However, there was nothing stopping Nikon from supporting camera driven focus in all DSLRs other than sheer unadulterated greed. Remember, camera driven focus isn't an old and dead technology, it still accounts for about twenty percent of the lenses that Nikon sells brand new today (available lenses, not gross sales). And, as the OP discovered there are still some lenses that have no AFS equivalent such as the defocus control lenses he refers too. Nikon is screwing us all yet some of you are inclined to thank them.
Very well said and totally accurate. The whole size, weight, cost, etc, arguments are total and complete BS. There have been many small, light, and inexpensive cameras made with the in camera focus motor included by various manufacturers. The removal of the focus motor was simply a decision by Nikon to promote and enhance the sale of their newer AFS lenses, and nothing more.
Sure there are advantages to the AFS lenses such as quieter operation which is better for video. However, as you correctly point out, having an in body focus motor does absolutely nothing to diminish the use of AFS lenses. Instead, having an in body focus motor simply makes the camera a more versatile tool that is able to auto focus with many more lenses.
