Not sure which lens you (BAK) are recommending.
As stated, the new version 24-70 is very sharp. However, portraiture is not always just about sharpness. The look of photos taken with the 50L (esp on a FF body) are superb. Framing portraits in an outdoor setting (per OP) is pretty easy and a zoom lens isn't that big of an advantage for me when shooting portraits.
I have a 24-105 IS, a 24-70 vI, and a 50L - I always grab the 50L for portraits.
