I thought the same what you are thinking now... till the plastic shavings from my lens landed on the sensor resulting in need for good cleaning.  So, I changed my mind.  The reality is that all higher quality lenses, not to mention pro-models are equipped with metal plates and the rubber seals.

It does not change the fact that cheaper plastic lenses are desired as well for the reason of lower cost.  It's good we have both to choose from.
