I can testify for this, happened to me last year on a trip as I was trying to climb on an outdoor table to take a sunset shot I missed the step and camera and I smashed heavily to the side of the table - bad bruises on the body and a broken lens hood - the front of the camera hit the table and the hood took all the impact, hate to think what would have happened if I haven't got a hood on - I always keep hoods on lenses and rarely use any filter.  And make sure to mount the hood correctly, I've seen a lot of people walking around with the hood mounting in reverse position on the lens - the storage position - strange !
