The PowerShots and a Rebel are two different critters. Different sized sensors, with different lens setups and output. Light is the key factor, in all of this. The SX50, did pretty well in this case, but a Rebel will normally win in more challenging situations of photography.
I would suggest, use tripod, timer or remote shutter, Raw plus Jpeg, manual mode. Adjust shutter speed and aperture to light conditions. I have a bad hoof for awhile yet, but even so, it was -6F here, no way I would be out. In the cold, use 2 SD cards, go back inside often, check Jpegs and make adjustments to camera settings. Later try to get best out of the larger sensor with the Raw data. A lot bigger lens might help, also.
