Here's the response I just got from Nikon Support on this issue which I didn't find helpful at all.

"If you are querying attaching filters to a Coolpix camera, as the lens extension is more delicate then the DSLR lenses I would not recommend attaching a filter directly to the lens itself. There are some third parties who have an adapter system that attaches to the body of the camera and does not actually touch the lens and I would look at those. Unfortunately as these are third parties I cannot recommend any or confirm compatibility as Nikon does not test third party items."

Bit strange considering one of the selling points for the P7700 was the ability to mount 40.5mm filters.
