Is it possible to use the 500D 77mm Close Up lens with the new 24-70mm f/4L lens ?, thanks

Should be, it just screw it on. You will get some extra magnification at 70mm with a working distance of perhaps 40cm. http://photonius.wikispaces.com/Close-up+%26+Macro

What will go on in the special macro mode is difficult to say. In special macro mode, you working distance is like 3cm from the front of the lens at max magnification (according to the dpreview preview here). Add to that the thickness of the 500D plus some extra magnification, you may end up with like 1-2 cm in front of the glass. Probably not that useful. So, the close-up lens may not give you a good practically useful extra magnification if you use the macro mode.

Whilst you may not be able to use the 500D in conjunction with the maximum macro setting of the lens, it may be the case that at a given magnification the 500D gives you a longer working distance than the lens alone. If that is so, it could be useful, but the 77mm 500D is a very expensive (and quite heavy) add-on for what is probably no more than a small gain.

Yes, that's the first part of my reply. At 70mm you get the maximal magnification effect from the 500D (close-up lenses work best at longer focal lengths, that's why I also gave the link http://photonius.wikispaces.com/Close-up+%26+Macro), and in terms of working distance, you will probably get something like 35-40cm. At infinity with the 500D (which has a focal length of 500mm), it would be about 50cm.

The minimal normal focus seems to be 70cm (which gives about 9:1 magnification for 70mm lens)

with this calculator, you see you get perhaps a 2 fold extra magnification (0.25x, i.e. 4:1)

That's quite a bit off from the 0.7x that you could achieve in the special macro mode. However, the working distances are very different. In the macro mode, perhaps you only get 1.2x extra magnification (only guesswork, based on the above calculator)

Perhaps a lens better suited for a 24-70 lens is the 250D with 4 dioptres, which gives more magnification at normal operating modes, though still not quite as high as the special macro mode. Still, much better working distance (about 15-20cm).

I don't thin the 250D is made by Canon in the 77mm size, but there may be off-brand equivalents.
