Elfroggio,

Thanks for the note.  Glad to hear "There is no optmal setting"  I've been going crazy.

ONe thing I've not tried is the back button focus!!!! :O)

These sea gulls are so quick, I don't have a full second to focus. This is a very difficult shot to get as they have to be positioned in flight in front of the bridge at the proper distance, height and flying at the right pitch for the effect I need.

I have much respect now for people who shoot fast birds in flight, it's very difficult.

Thanks for your tips. I'll try back button focus!

Best regards,

TVSTAFF

7D with 70-200 f2.8 USM IS II

Need some advice on optimal 7D setting for focus on really fast moving objects.

For two days I've been sitting on the edge of the FDR Drive in NYC trying to get a shot of a seagull up close in flight with the 59th Street Bridge in the background.

The 7D keeps focusing on everything but the birds. I know it's my fault. HELP!

There is no optimal setting, but I use:

AI Servo and back button focus.

If the bird is in flight (sky...) I use the 19 points and +1EV to +1.5EV if the bird is dark. Against a more busy background I use the Zone AF.

I focus for a full second before I use the shutter and I get "no bad".
