I haven't been in Nigeria, but I was travelling and photographing a in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Egypt and Rwanda usually with Canon 5d and 70-200 2.8 hanging on my shoulder. Sometimes I was alone, sometimes with friends, with guide,..and I didn't have any problem.

I think you should be ok if you use common sense and have guide/team with you. It is good to have someone who knows local people behavior, who speaks local language and can "talk you into" some situations or get you out of them. Ask permission to shoot people, you might be surprised with positive reaction especially in villages.
