Aperture is always wide open while looking thru the viewfinder and focusing, unless you press the DOF preview button. Once you take the shot the camera closes the aperture to the desired f-stop. It does not affect the AF. I have always found great success with AF with 2.8 zooms but not with 1.4 primes.
