If a speedlite is ON and recycled, on most bodies, the asterisk button performs a central spot pre-flash meter and lock (default is 16 secs).

Thanks for the information!  I'm sure I didn't have HSS set and it was very bright out.  I bet that was my problem.  if have an EX430 as well and setting HSS on it is much easier since its a button on the flash itself .  On the 270, I often forget to set it (in the camera body)!
