What is interesting is the over-blown reds with the green and blue well within range. You are correct, there appears to be something very wrong with the camera setup.

Yes something strange is going on.  This is not normal behavior for any camera.  I would already venture a guess that there is an equipment problem here.  Either the D800 is faulty and needs to be repaired or there is an issue with the lighting equipment.  I don't mean to limit the possibilities to those two things but they stand out as the likely culprits.

Given that Scott says that a whole series of shots with the same camera and lighting setup come out fine with this occasional "orange burn" phenomenon in the middle of it all I think we have to look past mundane suggestions like gray cards, color space, etc.  There is something else going on.
