set the flash in ettl to minus 1 on the exposure compensation on the flash not the camera. next take a spot reading on the brightest spot on the face keep the shutter button pushed half way to hold the reading, recompose and shot. that is your test shot now if too dark reduce the flash compensation by 1/2 if too bright increase minus comp. by 1/2 It is always trial and error without a light meter and if you buy one it will only work if the flash is in manual mode.
