Vari-Pixels: the germ of an idea for a new type of sensor.

(Someone bring on the germicide).

Rather than having the sensor surface carved into pre-determined pixels, make it a homogenous area. The pixels (number, size, locations) are defined AFTER the exposure by scanning, like CRT TVs: in a CRT the pixels are created by the electron beam's spot size, location & intensity. not by the characteristics of the screen.

A scanning operation (after the exposure) is programmed to knock electrons off the surface, these are then are captured and processed, and in conjunction with knowing the beam's location, pixels can be constructed 'on the fly'. The parameters of the scanning operation are defined in software, so could be subsequently changed by a firmware update.

Some really basic research would be necessary, since the above raises some questions that are probably not answered by current technologies, so I just float the idea (NB it's worth what you paid me for it).
