Nikon say in instruction books fine tune is not normally required. I have not needed to calibrate any of my lenses though I do use what I consider to be a first class autofocus target.

The Nikon link you quote is not as good as it might be as it does not draw potential testers attention to the guidance in camera instruction books and on the Nikon website as to what makes a first class target. Page 100 of the D800 instructions gives some guidance on what to avoid on a book cover if you want reliable testing results.

Many problems turn out to be a lack of intimate knowledge of complex modern camera equipment.
