There have been many who have criticized Pentax for the design of the K-01 and the Q for not having an EVF. It is difficult to use these cameras outside in bright light. It is difficult to use both hand held with manual lenses since there is no EVF. This is less of an issue on a tripod. Canon is receiving similar critique with the EOS-M.

Do you have the K-01 and the Q? My vision is not the best yet I have no problem at all in bright light. Yesterday I took the K-01 XC skiing and even totally surrounded by snow and with the sun behind me the viewfinder was easy to use. As far as manual lenses, focus peaking makes the K-01 better with manual lenses than any DSLR I've used. I've been dragging out manual lenses that I haven't used in years. The Q also works great with manual lenses with its focus peaking as long as the manual lens is of high enough resolution (and for instance a 50mm = 275mm FOV in Q land).

BTW, I was one of the ones who criticized the K-01 when it came out for not having a viewfinder. After owning one I can say: boy was I wrong.

What focus peaking has the K01? Is it like the Ricoh Mode1 which in turn is (sort of) similar to the Sony system? The K-01 has a high resolution screen and Mode1 probably works fine on it. But the Ricoh GRDIII/IV and GXR also have high resolution screens and the Ricoh Mode2 works better on it. It is a matter of choice I keep telling myself to re-try Mode1 but the flesh is weak and I really like the "stick figures" of Mode2 and the high precision where the screen is magnified.

On the Pentax Q Mode1 is used and although this is a great help the lower resolution screen limits it's usefulness to 2x magnification although 4x an be used sometimes at a great big pinch. I think Mode2 would be highly unusable on the Pentax Q at any magnification.

I second gxuser on the need for some sort of shading to make an lcd usable in bright light. An evf does this. But I have had good success with an aftermarket flip out lcd light-screen. My opinion is that adding an evf to the Q in many ways flies against the tiny-size concept of the Q and we might as well have a larger overall camera with a built in evf and probably larger sensor to boot - ie: not a Q. However I accept other's opinion as far comment. The only trouble is that with the shape of the Q lcd and it's polycarbonate cover a flip out shade n the back is not going to work very well. Also by adding extra depth it has more or less the same extra-size considerations that make an evf less desirable.

Furthermore if you use manual focus lenses on such a camera as a Q in bright light precise focus is nigh impossible even with focus peaking and the possibility that the reflection is not bad enough to preclude a reasonable stab at framing. ie: no evf on the Q is a pity, it would be very useful at times, but a cross that might have to be borne to get such a compact size.

Tom you have summarized the issue with the Q in bright light better than I could have.

For the Q, I would like to see an accessory port so an EVF can be attached to the shoe. Compatibility with the Ricoh port so both camera lines can use the same EVF would be a bonus.

For the K-01, I would like an integrated EVF. Maybe the styling should follow the Olympus OMD, only using the Pentax Spotmatic/MX/ME for inspiration. That said, I think the "rangefinder" style of EVF eyepiece in the left corner used in the Sony NEX 7/6 and Fuji XE1 would be more compact and useful.

For a foldable light shield, have you seen the Kaiser Digishield. It uses the tripod socket to attach to the camera. The attachment point is adjustable for different cameras.
