I've never encountered this problem and I sometimes have the battery out of the camera for a day or so.  You might need to check with your local Canon service center to see if there's something you can do to resolve this issue.  It appears that the onboard battery is not holding a charge... usually you can change this battery yourself in some (but not all) digital cameras.  It may be that the date/time battery was accidentally put in backwards or that the cell has failed.  This is not the same battery that you remove and recharge but a tiny button cell type battery that you normally never see or handle because it's hidden inside the camera some place inaccessible.

Either way, this is not normal.
