Thank your for your clear explanation and amazing photos, Greg. This will be VERY HELPFUL (!!!) for a whole lot of folks here on DP review, including myself.
I think that digital zooming rocks, like you said with 2X zooming you cannot really tell the quality difference at all. I am shooting almost exclusively video, and love to engage digital zoom. There are of course quality considerations even in video when you do a 5x or 10x digital zoom with the camera, but 2x is a no-brainer. You double the focal length w/o sacrificing anything. Brilliant strategy.
Thanks a bunch for this again, Greg!
I think there are 2 different possible functions at work here.
At least in the case of the GX1, there is "Extended Tele Conversion" (EX) and "Digital Zoom".
I suspect that Greg's test with DTC are the same as the Extended Tele Conversion where the resultant output image is a crop of the total sensor area without any resampling.
The resolution is half of the full sensor.
The digital zoom uses upsampling where one pixel is made into 4.
Although the pixel count and therefore the apparent resolution is higher it is a misleading level of resolution and wasteful of storage.

I wish it didn't resample, but the camera resamples it to the full resolution output as a normal JPEG.
Still the Quality is more than acceptable.
